In four years of pilot programs, Bayview Hunters Point youth have...

  • earned SFUSD credits during a community-based summer school with courses
on violence prevention, environmental health, and Bayview history.

  • worked as interns at SF General Hospital where they learned about health
statistics for Bayview residents and about careers through which they could help
    reduce disparities.

  • produced a local history exhibit at the Bayview Library where they learned research, interview, and presentation skills as well as facts about the neighborhood’s past.

  • led an education summit sponsored by the BVHP Project Area Committee to
share their perspective and gather input on design of a community high school.

  • identified health priorities among Bayview adolescents by working with UCSF pediatrics residents to design, conduct, and analyze surveys and focus groups.

  • presented a performing arts production “Changing Times: Proud Bayview
Keeps on Rolling” at the Bayview Opera House.

  • helped build the Healing Arts Center facility in collaboration with architects, landscape designers, artists, and contractors.

“We are creating this together. Everyone contributes. Youth are part of each stage of the projects from concept and design to implementation and assessment...We are able to meet such high expectations because there’s a strong foundation of communication, cooperation, and trust.”
